Inside the Studio: Where the Landscapes Come to Life on Canvas

Welcome to my studio — the quiet, light-filled space where each painting begins with a spark of memory, color, or light. This is where I translate the golden glow of the marsh, the hush of tidal creeks, and the shifting southern skies over mountain tops into oil paintings that collectors bring into their homes.

I believe the studio should be a sanctuary — not just a place to work, but a place to listen, observe, and respond to what nature has to say.

A Rhythm Rooted in Nature

Each painting starts long before brush meets canvas. I spend time walking, sketching, and photographing the marshes and creeks of the Low Country. I notice how the light moves over the water, how the wind touches the grasses, and how quiet everything can feel.

When I return to the studio, these impressions come with me. They don’t always show up in literal form — more often, they arrive as color, mood, and energy.

Materials That Matter

I work primarily with oil paints, using a loose impressionist style. I often paint with palette knives and thick brushes, letting the strokes stay visible and expressive. I want you to feel the wind, the light, and even the moment I stood in front of a quiet bend in the water.

The materials I use — heavy-bodied oils, cold-pressed linen canvas, natural brushes — are chosen to give a sense of texture and longevity. Many of my tools are worn from use, but that’s part of the beauty.

A Day in the Studio

I usually begin in silence — coffee in hand, windows open, and light pouring in. I like to warm up with quick studies or color mixing, then move into larger works once I’m in the rhythm.

There are days when the brush seems to move on its own, and others when I need to step away, rethink, or even start over. That’s the dance of painting. It’s never exactly the same — and that’s what keeps me coming back.

From My Studio to Your Space

What begins here — in quiet, layered moments of creation — is meant to live on in your space. Whether it's a soft-hued sunrise over the marsh or the glow of evening light on water, each painting carries a sense of calm and connection.

I release new original works once a month, always offering them first to my VIP Collector’s List. It’s one of the ways I like to honor the relationship between artist and collector — as something personal and lasting.

Thank you for stepping into my studio with me. I hope this space gives you a deeper understanding of what goes into each piece — and how much care, intention, and love goes into every brushstroke.

If you'd like to be the first to see my new work, join the VIP Collector’s List here for early access and monthly studio notes.

Warmly,
April Moffatt
