I painted this piece plein air—standing on the dock near the Bay Point Island Foundation—where the only sound was the rhythmic pull of the tide and the distant call of a heron.

In the search for the "Tranquil In-Between," Skull Creek captures that fleeting moment where the earth seems to hold its breath. Towering cumulus clouds drift with a slow, deliberate majesty across a powder-blue sky, reflecting the glory of the Creator in the mirror-still waters below. For me, this scene is a visual echo of the Psalms—a reminder that the heavens and the marshes alike declare a peace that surpasses the noise of our modern world.

Sculpting with Light and Texture: Using sculptural impasto techniques, April hand-applies professional-grade oils with a palette knife to recreate the physical "peaks and valleys" found in her original works. She strategically layers translucent glazes and thick pigments to catch and refract ambient light, mimicking the natural luminosity of the Lowcountry horizon. This process ensures that as the light in your room changes throughout the day, the painting "awakens," revealing new depths of color and tactile energy.
