For centuries, the people of the Lowcountry—from the indigenous tribes who left behind great shell middens to the generations of families today—have survived and thrived on this resilient crustacean. This study focuses on the rugged, calcified exterior of the shell, utilizing deep indigo and mineral grays to represent the iron-rich pluff mud of the salt marsh. April’s palette knife work emphasizes the shell's strength, serving as a tribute to the humble "provider" of the Southern coast and the enduring maritime heritage of South Carolina.
