Morning at Middleton: An Original Oil Study

36" X 24"

There is a specific, hushed weight to the air at Middleton Place before the world wakes up. This original oil painting is an exploration of that early morning light as it filters through the storied Live Oaks of Charleston. I have always been drawn to the way Spanish moss acts as a veil, softening the transition between the sky and the earth.

In the study of the Humanities, we look for places where history and nature are inextricably linked. Standing beneath these ancient boughs, one feels a profound sense of continuity. Morning at Middleton is my attempt to document that "Tranquil In-Between"—the moment when the dappled sun hit the pasture and the landscape felt less like a physical location and more like a visual exhale.

The Artistry: Light & Texture

This work is characterized by a fearless use of impasto technique, where the oil paint is applied with deliberate, sculptural strokes to capture the "flicker" of morning light.

  • Movement: By blending classical impressionism with bold, expressionist brushwork, the moss and the canopy appear to sway with a life of their own.

  • The Palette: I utilized a spectrum of luminous greens and soft, hazy ambers to evoke the biological calm of a South Carolina sunrise.

FRAMING

This original work is rendered in professional-grade oils on heavy-duty, archival-grade canvas. The thick impasto application is cured in our climate-controlled studio to ensure the structural integrity of the paint for generations. Our custom "Floater" frames provide an essential exoskeleton, protecting the canvas from tension shifts while providing a sophisticated, gallery-ready finish.
